Legislation for a National Housing Strategy (Bill C-304) scheduled for third reading debate in Parliament October 20, 2010.
Canada is the only major industrialized country without a national housing strategy. A pan-Canadian housing strategy, developed with key stakeholders, is critical to strategic, efficient and more effective allocation of resources.
"Draft national legislation to create a comprehensive housing plan for Canada – Bill C-304 – is scheduled to go back to the Commons for the start of third (and final) reading debate on October 20. The bill, proposed by Vancouver East MP Libby Davies, was passed on first and second reading with the support of the New Democratic Party, Liberal Party and Bloc Quebecois, plus one Conservative MP." (Wellesley Institute)
If passed into law, Bill C-304 would “require the Minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation to consult with the provincial and territorial ministers of the Crown responsible for municipal affairs and housing and with representatives of municipalities, Aboriginal communities, non-profit and private sector housing providers and civil society organizations in order to establish a national housing strategy.”
Please take a moment today to contact your Member of Parliament by email and urge them to support Bill C-304.

Census 2011 Controversy Media Round-up
The Canadian Government is planning to scrap the Census long-form questionnaire in favour of a one-time survey which makes responses voluntary rather than mandatory. There is concern among statisticians and researchers that this will weaken the quality and availability of data on employment, immigration, housing, incomes and education in Canada.
Statistics Canada is currently the most highly rated central statistical organization in the world.
