Destined for the Dole

A report focusing on giving young people skills, confidence and positive role models in order to stop disadvantaged young people becoming disadvantaged adults. The report shows that “more that 76% of young people polled said that finding a good job is their main priority for the future and that 63% felt that having more volunteering opportunities in their local area would give them the skills they needed to find a job.”

Changing Poverty Rates

A report by the CD Howe Institute claims the dramatic drop in the poverty rate among single-parent families over the past decade proves that the “tough love” policies imposed on welfare recipients by the governments of Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia in the mid-1990s worked. “Much of the credit lies with reform to social assistance programs”. Armine Yalnizyan of the Canadian Centre of Policy Alternatives counters that the three principal causes of the drop in the lone-parent poverty rate were strong economic growth, the introduction of the National Child Benefit and a buoyant labour market.
